On the east side of Taebaek Mountains running to the north, the terrain forms steep slopes to make gorges and narrow plains.
The important mountains include Cheolgamryeong, Bongyongsan, Duribong, and Noinbong in the northwest, and there are Jewangsan, Chilseongdae, Ongnyebong, Nochusan, Deogusan following the southwest border of the city. On the south, there are Daehwasilsan, Seokbyeongsan, Eungbongsan, Mangdeokbong, Piraesan, Gwaebangsan, and Gimabong mountains. The Yeongok stream, originates from the Odae mountain and flows to the East Sea. The Silli stream originating in the Cheolgabryong area flows eastward to form in the plain area downstream.
Also, in the central region, Sacheon stream makes rich plains in the surrounding area and flows into the East Sea. Namdae stream that originates in Daegwallryeong penetrates the center of the city to meet the Wangsan stream to flow to the East Sea. In addition, there are Song stream, Nangpung stream, Jusu stream and others upstream of Namhan river, carrying fertile soil to the plains where there is good agricultural land. Downstream from these rivers is a relatively wide flood plain, and at the far end of the plain there are sand beaches. These beaches directly influence the waves and the coastal sand pile appears continuously through Jumunjin. Lake Gyongpo is a lagoon that is formed with the appearance of such a sand pile.
