| The Origin and History |
| Gangneung is a place where the Yemaek
race lived in the old days. At that time it belonged to
the Wiman Joseon dynasty in 129 B.C. In 128 B.C., a general
of Yemaek, Namryeo, conquered King Wugu of the Wiman Joseon
dynasty and affiliated Gangneung to the Han Dynasty to
become a part of Changhae-gun(town). In the 14th year
of King Micheon of Kokuryo (313), Gangneung merged with
Koguryo to become Haseorang or Haseulla. Thereafter, in
the 11th year of King Jinheung of the Shilla dynasty (550
A.D.), it became a land of the Shilla dynasty, and changed
its name to myeongju in the 16th year of King Gyungduk
(757 A.D.), and again changed its name as Gangneung-bu
in the 34th year of King Chungryeol of Goryeo (1308).
In the era of King Gongyang, Gangneung was the Great Provincial
Capital having jurisdiction over the East Sea area with
Wonsan in the north and Uljin in the south. In the Joseon
Dynasty, the it belonged to Gangwon Province in the 4th
year of Taejo (1395), and became Gangneung -gun(town)
in the 33rd year of Gojong (1896) to have jurisdiction
over 21 myeons. In 1931, still under the occupation of
Japanese imperialism, Gangneung-myeon(hamlet) was promoted
to Gangneung-eup(sub-town)), and in 1955, after the establishment
of the government of the Republic of Korea, Gangneung-eup,
Sungduk-myeon and Gyongpo-myeon were merged and promoted
to Gangneung-si(city). Gangneung-gun (town) was separated
with its name changed into myeongju-gun. After integrating
myeongju-gun and Gangneung-si on January 1, 1995 , they
became part of Gangneung-si and remains so today. |
