Mental Illness Treatment Subsidy Program

Eligibility criteria

Foreigners suffering from mental illness who are enrolled in the national health insurance program of Korea

Scope

A part of the co-payment of mental health treatment expenses (not applicable to the non-covered co-payment)

Types of support
  • Emergency hospitalization : Financial support for medical expenses incurred after emergency hospitalization for patients at risk of causing self-injury or injury to others
  • Administrative hospitalization : Financial support for medical expenses incurred after administrative hospitalization for patients suspected of being at risk of causing self-injury or injury to others
  • Outpatient treatment : Financial support for outpatient treatment expenses for those who have received an administrative order for outpatient treatment support through the Mental Health Review Committee
  • Early stages of mental illness : Financial support for outpatient treatment expenses for those diagnosed with schizophrenia, delusional disorder, and any of the prescribed mood (affective) disorders within 5 years of onset

Application procedure
  • 01
    Apply for support through a medical institution or Mental Health Welfare Center
  • 02
    Receive notification of the result after a review
    (those in early stages of mental illness or eligible for outpatient treatment support are registered for case management at the center)
  • 03
    Return home after treatment without paying the medical bill → The medical institution will bill the local public health center / Return home after paying the medical bill → File a claim to the public health center through the Mental Health Welfare Center

Dementia Support Center

  • Register at the Dementia Safety Center
  • Early screening and detection of dementia
  • Those who are diagnosed with dementia are eligible to receive sanitary aid products (for 1 year), disappearance prevention services (identification tag and fingerprint registration), and customized case management support.
  • Financial support for dementia screening fee and dementia treatment and management costs (up to KRW 30,000 per month)
    • Foreign nationals residing in Korea are eligible to receive the support services if their residence in Korea is verified and their national health insurance enrollment is valid. Requirement: The applicant’s income must be below 120% of the median income.

    • Up to 3 months’ worth of folic acid between 4 and 15 weeks of pregnancy
    • Up to 6 months’ worth of iron supplements between 16 to 39 weeks of pregnancy
  • Required documents : alien registration card, pregnancy confirmation certificate, or maternity diary
Support for fertility treatment expenses
  • Eligibility criteria : Infertile couples who are legally married or have been in a common-law relationship for more than one year as of the date of application - The household income must be less than 180% of the median income based on national health insurance premium imposed for the previous month.
  • Required documents : Alien registration card and infertility diagnosis certificate

    Details of the support - Applicable age (based on the woman), 44 years of age or under, 45 years of age or above

Either the wife or the husband must be a Korean citizen and both the wife and the husband must be enrolled in national health insurance and have been imposed a premium
Support for infertility diagnostic tests
  • Eligibility criteria : must have resided in Gangwon state for at least 6 months
  • Details of the support
    • It covers the cost of the first infertility diagnostic test at a fertility treatment institution.
    • Cap : up to KRW 150,000 per couple
  • Application deadline : within 6 months after the test
  • Required documents : alien registration card, medical bill receipt, detailed statement, and copy of bankbook
In case both the wife and the husband are foreigners, their visas must be F-2 (Long-term Residency), F-5 (Permanent Residency), or F-6 (Marriage Migrant).
Postpartum health care support
  • Eligibility criteria : must have resided in Gangwon state for at least 6 months
  • Details of the support
    • Up to KRW 150,000 for the first child, KRW 200,000 for the second child, and KRW 300,000 for the third child
    • Must be used toward medical expenses related to the recovery of the mother’s health
  • Application deadline : within 6 months after delivery
  • Required documents : alien registration card, medical bill receipt, and copy of bankbook
In case both the wife and the husband are foreigners, their visas must be F-2 (Long-term Residency), F-5 (Permanent Residency), or F-6 (Marriage Migrant).
Mother and newborn health management support
  • Eligibility criteria : The household income must be below 150% of the median income based on recent health insurance premium imposed

    Exceptional support is provided to marriage immigrant mothers even if their household income exceeds the median income.

  • Details of the support : A health management professional visits the family’s home to provide postpartum care and health care for the mother and newborn.
  • Application deadline : From 40 days before delivery to within 30 days after delivery
  • Required documents : alien registration card and maternity diary

In case both the wife and the husband are foreigners, their visas must be F-2 (Long-term Residency), F-5 (Permanent Residency), or F-6 (Marriage Migrant).
Support for medical expenses for high-risk pregnancies
  • Eligibility criteria : The household income must be less than 180% of the median income based on national health insurance premium imposed for the previous month.
  • Details of the support : 90% of the total co-payment and non-covered expenses incurred during hospitalization after being diagnosed with one or more of the top 19 factors associated with high-risk pregnancy for up to KRW 3 million
  • Application deadline : within 6 months after delivery
  • Required documents : alien registration card, diagnosis certificate, confirmation of admission and discharge, medical bill receipt, detailed statement, and copy of bankbook
Permanent residents, marriage migrant women (F-5 or F-6), refugees under the Refugee Convention, and Sakhalin Koreans who have returned as permanent residents
